When God Breaks Into the Ordinary

first hand revelation God

God's Presence

Have you ever experienced a supernatural surprise—a sudden, heart-stopping close encounter with God right when you least expected it? If so, you are in incredible company. Everyday people—from brilliant university thinkers and busy truck drivers to college students, teachers, and prison inmates—report stumbling into breathtaking, undeniable moments of God's presence. These aren't wild fantasies or overactive imaginations. They are real, life-altering encounters experienced by completely rational minds.

Meet Alvin Plantinga: A Titan of Logic

Take Dr. Alvin Plantinga, widely regarded as one of the world's leading philosophers. With a brilliant academic career teaching at powerhouses like Yale, Harvard, Chicago, and Notre Dame, his logical mind is staggering. Yet, for Plantinga, God is not merely an abstract thought experiment or a topic for a dusty classroom debate. God is a living, breathing reality. (https://stories.nd.edu/stories/plantinga/)

The Crucible of Doubt at Harvard

Growing up with a solid foundation of faith, young Alvin eventually packed his bags for Harvard University. Stepping onto campus, he was immediately hit by a tidal wave of competing worldviews and intellectual opinions.
Surrounded by brilliant minds who held traditional beliefs in absolute contempt, Plantinga began to question everything: Could what I’ve always believed actually be true?

The Breakthrough in the Rain

The turning point came on a miserable, gloomy evening. Walking back from dinner through the dark, wind-driven rain, Plantinga was miles away from home and wrestling deeply with doubt.
Then, everything changed in a flash:
"Suddenly it was as if the heavens opened; I heard, so it seemed, music of overwhelming power and grandeur and sweetness; there was light of unimaginable splendor and beauty; it seemed I could see into heaven itself; and I suddenly saw or perhaps felt with great clarity and persuasion and conviction that the Lord was really there and was all I had thought."
The impact of that single rainy night echoed for years. Even when intellectual arguments raged around him, they suddenly felt hollow—merely academic debates stripped of any real existential threat.

What This Means for You

If a powerhouse intellect like Professor Plantinga can experience the undeniable reality of the divine, it shatters the myth that faith is only for the weak-minded.

He might just show up in your life when you least expect it. Alvin Plantinga found that out for himself—and he is far from the last.
Have you ever had an unexpected encounter with God that changed how you view the world?

The Lord is in This Place

When God Meets Us Where We Least Expect It

We often picture God meeting people in holy sanctuaries, quiet prayer closets, or moments of pristine spiritual clarity. But the Bible tells a different story—one where God frequently breaks into the messiest, most desperate chapters of our lives.
Consider Jacob. Before he became a patriarch, he was a fugitive. A master of deception, Jacob had cheated his twin brother, Esau, out of his birthright and tricked his aging, blind father, Isaac, into giving him the family blessing. Furious and grieving, Esau vowed to kill him. Fearing for his life, Jacob fled everything he knew.
Alone, penniless, and sleeping with a stone for a pillow under the open desert sky, Jacob was as far from home—and seemingly from God—as a person could get. Yet, it was right there in the dirt that everything changed.

The Vision at Bethel

As recorded in Genesis 28:11-17, Jacob had an extraordinary dream:

"He saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. There above it stood the Lord, and he said: 'I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac... I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go... I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.'"

When Jacob woke up, reality rushed back in, but it was matched by an overwhelming sense of holy awe. He declared:

"Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it... How awesome is this place!
This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven."

Jacob expected a night of fear and loneliness. Instead, he received a supernatural encounter. He was a fugitive running for his life, yet heaven met him right on the ground he lay upon.

Where Will You Find Him?

Have you ever experienced a moment like that? An unexpected, overwhelming collision of heaven and earth where you suddenly whispered, "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it"?
God’s presence isn’t confined to religious spaces. He breaks through in the most surprising places:

For many, God’s presence becomes most real during the darkest seasons of life—sometimes even in the quiet hum of an intensive care unit or the back of an ambulance, when eternity feels close and fear gives way to a profound, unexplainable peace.

Others encounter Him in breathtaking moments of creation. A lifelong skeptic once shared how his atheism collapsed the moment he held his newborn daughter. Gazing at her intricate design and feeling an overwhelming surge of love, he knew instantly that God was right there in the delivery room.

God even meets people in places society writes off. One prison inmate recounted tuning his radio through rock stations when his hand suddenly "froze" on a Christian broadcast. Listening to a message about the Gospel, he prayed along, wept tears of joy, and realized the Holy Spirit had just broken through the concrete walls of his cell.

A God Who Is Always Near

Jacob’s story reminds us that we are never too far, too broken, or too lost for God to find us. Whether you are walking through a season of anxiety, celebrating a breathtaking new beginning, or feeling completely isolated from the world, you are never outside His reach.
Take a moment today to look around right where you are. You might just find yourself saying, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”
Where have you most unexpectedly sensed the presence of God in your own life?

A Bizarre Bargain: How God Meets Us in the Unexpected

Isn't it amazing how God so often finds us and connects with us right where we are? Consider the story of a long-haul trucker who had been ignoring God completely. One day, he ran into a friend at a truck stop. Out of the blue, his friend asked a piercing question:
"What would happen if you smashed your truck and got killed? Would you go to heaven?" Caught off guard, the trucker replied, "Hmmm. I don’t know." His friend didn't sugarcoat it: "Then you’re in deep trouble, brother!"
The conversation stuck, echoing in his mind as he climbed back behind the wheel. What if God is real? he thought. What would He do with a guy like me?

The Overloaded Rig and a Desperate Deal

Weeks later, the trucker found himself in a tight spot. The crew loading his rig had made a critical error, overloading it well past the legal weight limit. He knew he was facing a hefty fine—or worse, being forced to dump part of his cargo at the first inspection station. That’s when he decided to strike a deal with the Almighty. He prayed a risky, desperate bargain:
"God, there’s no way I’m going to drive hundreds of miles past all these weigh stations without at least one being open. But if every single weigh station is closed—if I make this whole trip without getting caught—I’ll take it as a sign that You exist, and I’ll start going to church next Sunday."

The Journey That Changed Everything

As he rolled down the highway, something strange happened. He didn't pass a single police cruiser.

With every closed station, a mix of relief and dread washed over him. He was relieved he wouldn't face a fine, but terrified because he realized God might actually be listening. The further he drove, the more he felt an overwhelming, undeniable presence right there in the cab of his eighteen-wheeler.
When he finally reached his destination safely, he knew he couldn't back out. He took his wife to church the following Sunday. Both of them ended up committing their lives to Christ, and their lives were changed forever.

A Silly Bargain, a Graceful God

Looking back, the trucker realized his bargain wasn't exactly a spiritual masterpiece. It certainly wasn't God’s job to help a law-breaking driver dodge the scales! As he grew in his faith and came to know Jesus better, he laughed at how foolish his deal had been—and he stopped trying to use God as a shortcut to get out of trouble.
Yet, the fact remains: God met him right where he was. He took the trucker up on his unorthodox prayer, sparking a transformation that was entirely real.
You never quite know when you’re going to receive a supernatural surprise. Even in the cab of a semi-truck, with barely any understanding of faith, a man can find himself echoing the words of Jacob of old:

"Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it." (Genesis 28:16)

Living in the Presence of the Unseen

What to Make of Supernatural Surprises

What should we make of supernatural surprises? Is there something wrong with people who experience them—or with those who don't? To find answers, it helps to look back at the story of Jacob.
Jacob was as shrewd as a professor, as crooked as a convict, and as eager to bargain as a desperate truck driver. Yet, he was also a man chosen by God. To get his attention, God used a remarkable dream of a stairway stretching between heaven and earth. While Jacob had heard about God from his grandparents (Abraham and Sarah) and parents (Rebekah and Isaac), this moment brought a profound, absolute clarity: God was real, and He was addressing Jacob personally.

The Unseen Reality Around Us

God gave Jacob a glimpse of a permanent, everyday truth that is usually hidden from our view: there is an active connection between heaven and earth. On that stairway, God’s angels were constantly ascending and descending:

We may not regularly see this heavenly realm with our physical eyes, but it is entirely real. Whether we realize it or not, every moment of our lives unfolds in the presence of the supernatural. A spiritual surprise often serves to wake us up to this reality, echoing Jacob’s realization:
“Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”

Why God’s Word Matters More Than the Experience

While an extraordinary experience catches our attention, it isn't enough on its own. We also need a Word from God. We need Scripture to understand His plans and purposes, and we need His solid promises to live by long after the emotional high of an experience fades. In Jacob's dream, the most crucial element wasn't just what he saw—it was what God said.

Jacob responded by trusting those promises and dedicating his life to God (Genesis 28:20-21). Long after the dream faded, Jacob’s mind echoed with divine assurance through every high and low of his life.

Evaluating Our Experiences Today

Today, we don't have to rely solely on fleeting dreams; we have the fullness of God's Word in the Bible. Scripture gives our faith the staying power we need when sensations fade, and it acts as the ultimate filter for evaluating our experiences.

If a supernatural encounter causes you to contradict Scripture, invent your own notion of God, or ignore biblical truth, it is untrustworthy—potentially a delusion, or a misinterpretation turned into an idol.

If an encounter wakes you up to God's reality, aligns with His plan of salvation in the Bible, deepens your trust in His promises, and fuels your desire for fellowship with Christ, then it is a genuine gift from God.
How has Scripture helped you ground your faith when life feels uncertain?

Stairway to Heaven: Faith, Experience, and the Bridge Between Earth and Sky

Looking for a Sign? Why Your Experience Doesn’t Define Your Faith

What if you haven’t had an astounding, earth-shattering spiritual experience? Does that mean something is fundamentally wrong with you? Not necessarily. The Spirit of God moves in many different ways, and not everybody needs the same dramatic moments. Everybody needs the same Lord, the same Word of God, and the same Savior.
Just believe God’s Word, accept His promises in Christ, and trust that His Spirit is at work in you. That is what truly matters—not the specific emotional path that led you to that point.

Jesus: The Ultimate Stairway to Heaven

Jesus is the ultimate stairway. Because He is both the Son of Man and the Lord of heaven, He bridges the gap between earth and sky, bringing God to man and man to God. He is the true meaning behind every genuine supernatural encounter.

From Doubt to Peace: A Personal Journey

I did not grow up in a Christian home, but as I got older, some very heavy questions crept in:

Those doubts filled me with dread, but I was too proud to share this with anybody.  One evening something drew me, compelled me to go to Church service. That evening there was a guest speaker, an evangelist. He was an accomplished piano player. He was signing and playing the piano, a song he wrote about the Walls of Jericho.
In the middle of this song God revealed Himself to me. How this happened was a miracle. At the moment God revealed Himself, the evangelist stopped playing in the middle of his song, got up and pointed directly at me and said God has just revealed Himself to you. It was undeniable. God had just performed a miracle before my eyes. A First Hand Revelation Of God.

Your Invitation to Trust

My experience didn’t add anything to what the Bible says; it was simply God’s miraculous way of reaching a confused kid. Since then, I haven’t lived on emotional highs, but I live by faith in God's Word.

God is real, the Bible is true, Jesus is Lord, and His promises are yours through faith. You don't need a dazzling vision; you just need the Good News. "Surely, the Lord is in this place... the Lord will be my God."
Would you like to explore how to take that first step of faith in your own life today?
